My fifth book ‘The Teenage Guide to Digital Wellbeing‘ has launched in the UK, with a launch in the USA and Canada following on 3rd September.

Getting a better balance with tech

The book is for teens and tweens – aged 11 to 16 – to help them build healthy online habits, stay safe online and learn how to put their devices down from time to time in order to enjoy some of the things only the offline world can offer.

It’s divided into twelve chapters which can be followed as a month-by-month guide:

  • Month 1 – Start Mindfully
  • Month 2 – Love Yourself
  • Month 3 – Permission to Unplug
  • Month 4 – Don’t be Fooled
  • Month 5 – Healthy Relationships
  • Month 6 – Use your Hands
  • Month 7 – Go Analogue
  • Month 8 – Connect with Nature
  • Month 9 – Build Resilience
  • Month 10 – Make a Difference
  • Month 11 – Awe!
  • Month 12 – Reflections and Celebrations

Each chapter has exercises, prompts and suggestions on how to build healthy habits, as well as accessible explanations on how the digital world works and how to navigate some of its pitfalls.

The book encourages the teens to keep a logbook (within the book), tracking their habits and setting goals and objectives for themselves. This is all about helping them to develop a mindfulness habit – scrolling mindlessly is one of the biggest time-wasters for teens and adults alike – which will help them online.

Some reviews

The book has already had some lovely reviews:

This is a great book for providing digital media safety and offering alternative options.

It covers the challenges of social media, screen time, mental health, and peer pressure, among other topics, and provides interesting innovative ways to spend your time like exploring nature and building positive friendships outside the digital community. It’s thought-provoking but not in a bossy overbearing way or preachy and condescending. A great tool to have on hand for this age, and good for parents who want to connect with their teens.

Amazon 5* review

This is the perfect book to help teenagers, and those who love them, learn to balance screentime and real-world experiences. The range of activities suggested are impressive and broad, and not only will they promote and support the development of healthy habits, but they are consistently fun and life enriching.

The Teenage Guide to Digital Wellbeing

I’ve really enjoyed writing ‘The Teenage Guide to Digital Wellbeing’. It’s the culmination of all the work I’ve done speaking in schools over the past decade and a distillation of the advice I offer both teens and their parents. I really hope it’s going to be a useful and practical guide to help teens and their parents navigate the increasingly complicated relaltionship with the digital world with confidence and resiliance.
