EPISODES

‘It’s Complicated’ launched February 2019 and was selected by iTunes for its New & Noteworthy podcast feature in its first few weeks of launch. In each series, Tanya discusses how being over-connected to your smartphone can affect everything from your physical health, your mental health, your work and your sex life. The goal with all these conversations is to untangle what a healthy relationship with your phone looks like and to empower the listener with tips and ideas to leave them feeling healthier, happier, and with hours more time in their day.

S7 Ep 8 The Folding Lady

TikTok sensation The Folding Lady (aka Sophie Liard) joins us for the last episode in Series Seven to talk about her meteoric rise to internet stardom in lockdown with folding tips and tricks. Now with 4 mill followers, she shares how she curates her own social media feed and keeping it real for her followers.

S7 Ep 7 Jack Rhysider

Cybersecurity veteran Jack Rhysider, host of the Darknet Diaries podcast, is telling us everything we need to know to keep ourselves safe online. From the threat from SIM swapping attacks, to how ‘social engineers’ are targeting us to help them commit their crimes. This episode features true crime stories from the dark side of the internet.

S7 Ep 6 Michelle and Joan MacDonald

Mother and daughter Michelle and Joan MacDonald are using tech to inspire, motivate and to change lives – and they’re focused on a part of the population that has been rather ignored and invisible online – women in their 40s and 50s. But that’s not the most incredible thing about this pair. It was daughter Michelle MacDonald’s own ahead- of-the-curve use of technology for coaching and training older women that helped her mother change her life in the first place – resulting in Joan being dubbed, at 76, the ‘Baby Boomer Fitness Influencer’.

S7 Ep 5 Silkie Carlo

Silkie Carlo, director of British civil liberties NGO Big Brother Watch joins to chat about the huge rise of facial recognition tech and what it means for our privacy and human rights. From biometric passports and unlocking our phones, to police real-time face recognition cameras and even face ID in supermarkets – she’s talking about what we need to know about how the tech works, who’s using it and what we should worry about.

S7 Ep 4 Tim Spector

Tim Spector, Professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College in London and co-founder of the Zoe Covid Symptom Study app – the world’s largest COVID-19 study – joins us to talks about this revolutionary community science project, downloaded by nearly 5 million UK users. It changed the way we understood coronavirus and Zoe’s on-going nutrition study is aiming to do the same for our diet by building a personalised understanding of how our body responds to food.

S7 Ep 3 Michelle Elman

Join Queen of Boundaries, broadcaster, author and life coach Michelle Elman, as she helps us all set better boundaries online. From dealing with ghosting, managing the 24:7 email culture and sending clearer and more effective texts – she’s helping us all learn how to say “No”.

S7 Ep 2 Max Benwell

Journalist Max Benwell found himself caught up in a catfisher’s games in rather an unusual way. He chats to Tanya about how he tracked the catfisher down, what he learned about catfishing in the process and how it’s changed his relationship with tech.

S7 Ep 1 Rory Cellan-Jones

Rory Cellan-Jones, Former BBC Technology Correspondent, launches Series Seven of ‘It’s Complicated’ talking about his book ‘Always On: Hope and Fear in the Social Smartphone Era‘. He chats about his 15 years at the coalface of the digital revolution, his thoughts on the Big Tech founders’ culpability, and his optimism for a brand new health tech era.

S6 Ep 9 Vex King

Vex King returns as It’s Complicated’s first ever returning guest; to talk about how healing ourselves from pain and trauma – developing better self-awareness as a result – is going to help all of us develop a healthier, happier, relationship with social media and the digital world.
